Jan 31- Report Cards Come Home

What did you learn today?
We learned about fractions in math.
How did you show what you learned?
We read a story called Moira's Birthday which was about fractions. We also did worksheets that had fractions and we had to tell what the numerator and the denominator were. Then we would make our own fraction with the same numerator and denominator.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn to order fractions.

Jan 30 - The Popping Out Hand

What did you learn today?
We learned how to draw a 3D hand using straight lines and curved lines.
How did you show what you learned?
We used rulers to create the straight lines. This is good practice for our next math unit which is measurement. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn the unit measurement in math.

We need to learn more chords so we can play more songs.

Jan 25- Do You Need It Or Do You Want It?

What did you learn today?
We learned more about the Blackfoot needs and wants.
How did you show what you learned?
We had two pieces of paper with columns. We went to different stations and sketched the artifact, said what it is made of and what it is used for.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn how they would build their shelter and how they used the different items.

What did you learn today?
We learned more about the Blackfoot people. 
How did you show what you learned?
We looked at genuine First Nations artifacts from Fort Calgary. We had to sketch them, name them and tell whether they were a want or a need. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to sketch all of the items in order to learn more about the Blackfoot way of life. We need to know how the artifacts were made.

Jan 23 - I Think I Was Drawing A Spatula Tree!

What did you learn today?
We learned how to shade and draw very detailed trees today in Art.
How did you show what you learned?
We looked back to our sketches from last FAF and made some impressive improvements to our original drawings.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to fix all of our drawings and try to use what we learned to make more realistic drawings next Friday when we finish our Ethnobotany activity.

Jan 20 - I Need Some Medicine

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned about the medicinal uses and other uses of plants that the Blackfoot people would have used them for. We pretended we were ethnobotanists. 
How did you show what you learned?
We had a book that had information about the plants in our WW. We got a card with symptoms. We had to research which plant might be used to cure the symptoms on the card. We then had to find the plant and sketch the plant and place it on our map in our field journals. We also had to add some jot notes about the uses for each plant in our journals.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to re-sketch the different plants in the different seasons. It would be interesting to research if some of these plants are used still for humans today. We need to research more about how plants grow (or don't grow) in the different seasons.

We learned that pigs can generate electricity!!!! We were researching natural resources of Alberta and deciding if they were renewable or nonrenewable resources.

We read in the textbooks and researched some questions from a sheet that we had to fill out.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn where in Alberta these resources are found.

We are playing volleyball in gym, and we have learned to volley, bump and serve.
How did you show what you learned?
We played a game where we had to catch the ball and pass it to 2 other people before it goes over the net.
What do you need to learn next?
We need try a game with volleying and bumping instead of catching.

Jan 17-Clean Up!!!!!!

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned how to make our own cleaning product that is from natural ingredients. This is good for our environment because the chemicals from other cleaners won't get into our water system, traditional cleaners pollute our air and it is less expensive.
How did you show what you learned?
We did experiments with different items, like a mirror with toothpaste, muddy wood floor and coffee on carpet and a tray with lard. We tested different natural ingredients to see which worked best. Ask me what they were.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn how to clean other things with different ingredients.

What did you learn today?
We learned how to identify, producers, decomposers and consumers in the Whispering Woods.
How did you show what you learned?
We looked for evidence of plants, animals and decomposers. We also looked for evidence of natural and human waste. We then recorded it in our science duotangs.
What do you need to learn next?
We would like to do a decomposing experiment.

What did you learn today?
We learned how recycling is sorted in the Calgary Recycling Depot.
How did you show what you learned?
We watched 2 videos and then we started a journal entry to talk about what we learned. The videos are posted below.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn more about how our garbage is handled. It would have been super great if we could have gone to the dump, however it was booked up. Boo.

What did you learn today?
We learned how to curl in gym.
How did you show what you learned?
We did a relay race to practice sweeping, we played a game of curling by throwing rocks/stones into the house.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to get better at aiming the rocks at the button. If you are interested in actual curling there is a junior curling league that happens at the Huntington Hills rink or at the Winter club.

What did you learn today?
We learned about the nutrient cycle.
How did you show what you learned?
We got into groups and we cut descriptions of the nutreient cycle into pieces and arranged them in order. Then we drew it on a piece of paper and then we played the game nutrient tag outside. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to finish writing our journal entry about the game and play the game again in a different role.

What did you learn today?
We learned how to play the game "ATTACK", which is a review activity to help us practice the skills we have learned in any subject.
How did you show what you learned?
We got into groups of 3 and we picked one person in our group to draw a snowman on the board. Ms Cowdy gave us math questions to answer on a white board together with the group. Ask me how to play the game!
What do you need to learn next?
We need to continue the game tomorrow.

We learned a few tips about how to sort our garbage so that it doesn't end up in the landfill.

The DC Green team members did a presentation on how to sort garbage based on the workshop they attended in December.

We need to learn how waste affects nature in our world.
