Feb 28 - Hey Fred(????) I Discovered an Artifact!!!

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We did three activities today: Reading the Symbols, Resourceful People and the Curating Game.
How did you show what you learned?
Reading the Symbols: We found out what the symbols represented and why people put them on their tipis. Ask me more!
Curating Game: We pretended we were curators and we looked for the best artifacts. We then picked three artifacts that had a story to tell. We chose a picture and a title for them. Ask me what my group did!
Resourceful People: We had to identify four natural resources from the ranching area and the oil and gas area. We had to fill out a sheet of the benefits and challenges of the industries created by the natural resources. We also looked at artifacts and tried to figure out what they were and which industry they were from.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to use our new found knowledge to help us write our tipi stories.

Feb 24- The Great Buffalo Hunt!!

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We counted all trees in a certain area in the whispering woods and we learned that every tree represented one buffalo in the times of the Blackfoot people (about 9000 years ago) We also learned about the hunting methods of the blackfoot hunters.
How did you show what you learned?
We used a map of WW to find our area and then counted the trees. To learn more about the buffalo hunt we played the game SNEAK! Ask me about it!
What do you need to learn next?
We are going to write what we learned about the hunt into our learning journals. On the weekend, you can see if you can find out more about the buffalo hunt!

We learned to spell new words based on small words (like age) or patterns (like en or nor)

We did "Making Big Words" activity for Word Work today. Ask me to explain it to you.
What do you need to learn next?
We can transfer these skills to spell bigger words better in our writing.

Today when the Simon Fraser students came to our class, we learned all about them as an activity for anti-bullying day.

We asked questions about each other and we would draw things on a pink paper t-shirt for anti bullying day.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to finish the t-shirts and hang them up in the hallway.

Feb 21-Why is it So Hard to Build a Tipi?????

What did you learn today?
We learned how to put our tipi together today.
How did you show what you learned?
Once we had finished painting our buffalo skin, we built our tipi structure with our newspaper poles. We tied them together and then we wrapped our buffalo skin around them. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn how the ceremonies are held in the tipi.

Feb 15- Would a Tipi That Big Fit In The Classroom?

What did you learn today?
We learned what most of the animals looked like on the blackfoot tipis, we also learned the symbolism of each of the different animals.
How did you show what you learned?
We decorated our mini tipis and used colours that the blackfoot would have been able to make years ago.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to build our tipis with our poles and skin (pretend)

Feb 13 - How Do You Build a Tipi?

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned about the Blackfoot and what is in their tipi. We learned what side the men sat on and what side the women sat on. There are helpers by the door.
How did you show what you learned?
We identified what the designs meant, we drew a bird's eye view of the inside of the tipi during a ceremony. We also designed the outside of our tipi.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn how to build a tipi. We need to bring materials to build the tipi tomorrow. 

YOU ARE = YOU'RE is not the same thing as YOUR. This means your something. Like your dog, your pencil. This means something very very different if you say YOU'RE dog. Or YOU'RE pencil. Just remember this when you are writing YOUR Valentines that YOU'RE spelling correctly!!!

What did you learn today?
We sketched tipi symbols and patterns and learned that the patterns keep the Blackfoot safe from the weather. 
How did you show what you learned?
In our social duo tang we sketched as anthropologists what we saw from the images of tipis. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn more about the symbols on the tipis and what they mean.
We would also like to learn how they made and decorated their tipis. We wonder how long it took them to make their tipis.

Feb 8 - Regions and Resources

What did you learn today?
We learned about resources and the natural regions of Alberta and where they are.
How did you show what you learned?
We had a map of Alberta with the regions and natural resources drawn on it. We had to ask 5 questions with answers about what we could see on the map. We also had to colour in the regions to match our legend.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to understand which region the blackfoot lived in and what other resources they might have used.

What did you learn today?
We learned what natural resources were in different parts of Alberta. The natural resources are livestock, crops, oil and gas, coal, oil sands, and forestry.
How did you show what you learned?
We looked at a map and the legend and we asked 5 different questions about the resources on the map, and answered our questions.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn how oil and gas is taken out of the ground.

Feb 6 - The African Drum is Called A Djembe

What did you learn today?
We went to One World Drumming - we will be going everyday this week and there will be a sharing performance on Friday at 10:30
How did you show what you learned?
We went to the music room and met Mr. K who taught us how to play the African drum, which is called the Djembe. He taught us the three notes A, B, C. C is the hardest. We used a secret code to know when to start and stop. Ask me what it is.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn how to play our song. We hope that you can come to our sharing on Friday!

Feb 2 - Did You Do All Your Daily Five?

Highlights
What did you learn today?
In daily five we either read to self, read to someone, listened to reading, Word Work or Work on Writing.
How did you show what you learned?
Read to Self- We worked on a menu that had activities called appetizers, main course and dessert.
Read to Others - After we finished we would do either non fiction or fiction activities. We had to roll a dice and choose the activity on the blue or black card. The fiction activities are cards with different activities on them.
Listen to Reading - We go onto Raz kids and we read the book and do the quiz.
Word Work - We have to try and make words with a list of letters. We then have to sort them and transfer them.
Work on Writing - we are writing our Great Trash Bash - 7 paragraphs! We are talking about 3 things we noticed at school from our waste audit, why it is important and the possible solutions that we can come up with to try and do better. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to see if we can start to put into practice some of our waste reduction ideas.

Feb 1 - Buffalo Superstore

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned about the parts of the buffalo and what the first nations people of about 4000 years ago would have used them for. 
How did you show what you learned?
We got a sheet of a buffalo and we used the textbook to look at what parts of the buffalo are used for and we labelled them. We also had to include the artifacts we examined.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn about the spiritual side of the Blackfoot people.
