We divided up into 4 teams and we could make alliances with the other teams to defeat the other two teams faster.

Dec 13 - The Great Elf Game

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned how to play The Great Elf Game! It is a game of risk, chance and probability.
How did you show what you learned?
We used a sheet to record our information for the game. Each person starts with 12 elves. You have to decide an amount of elves to go to either the woods, the forest or the mountain road to cut down trees and make money for you. Then Ms Cowdy the amazing meteorologist, rolls a die to tell you what the weather is. If it is a blizzard, the elves you sent to the forest do not come back with trees. If you send them to the mountain and it is a blizzard, they do not come back in time to cut down more trees. Ask me why I have to choose to send them to the three different places.
What do you need to learn next?
We will continue the game and find out if we win the lottery and who makes the most money.

We learned that air molecules squeeze together in the cold and expand in the warmth.

We blew up a balloon and took it outside and observed what happened to the balloon. Ask me what happened!
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn why the boiling water froze in midair. Ask me about that demonstration and maybe you could help me do it at home over the holidays. I need your help because it involves boiling water!

We took our sentences from last time and we had to reduce our sentences in half by combining them together.

What did you learn today?
We are working on division in math right now. Grade 3's are learning how to divide, grade fours are practicing dividing basic fact numbers from the 6's to the 9's and dividing with remainders and some students are working on long division in a heptaphalon problem.
How did you show what you learned?
We wrote a division check for understanding sheet and then started working on activities that we need to practice.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to keep practicing division.

What did you learn today?
In music we did rhythm sticks and played on the xylophones.
How did you show what you learned?
We sang the song with the rhythm sticks and metalaphones.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn the next part of the song.

We also learned about a new math program that we are going to start:MNM which stands for Multiplication Ninja Monday. Students must practice certain multiplication facts in order to earn belt colours. Practice websites are in the links section. Students must practice their facts at home, in any way that works for them, and may try the practice test at home as many times as they would like. In order to earn their belt (which is actually a bead) they must complete the test at school on a Monday. The first belt is white and students must complete the 1's and 5's and achieve 100% in under 4 minutes to achieve their belt. Once they have achieved their orange belt, they will get their ninja pencil. Mondays will be belt testing day. Students must move through the levels in order to achieve their black belt of multiplication.

We learned word work in Daily Five.
How did you show what you learned?
We have a sheet of paper that has letters on it and we have to try to make at least 20 words from the letters and try and find the secret word. After that, we have to sort them according to their word family, then we have to use those word families to transfer our skills to help us spell other words and the challenge is to write a story using all the words.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to try to use the spelling skills from word work to spell correctly in our other work.

Nov 4 - Old, Dusty and Very Heavy!

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned about how to be paleontologists. We watched a video about a day in the life of Thomas Carr, a paleontologist. We learned that to find fossils, they walk around a site and try to find things that catch their interest - this is called prospecting. Then when they find a site they map it out with a grid and GPS.
How did you show what you learned?
We took tools out to the Whispering Woods and we built a 2 by 2 array (which was 1 meter squared) with bamboo sticks and string. We then recorded the observations we made in our paleontologist journals that we made this week. Some groups took a GPS coordinate to locate their grid.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to now dig a little bit in our location and try and find some clues about Alberta's past.

What do you need to learn next?
After we have the four ways to multiply stuck in our brain we need to choose the one that works best for us. We can do this by more speed mathing and practice.

To get the answer we counted the panes, we skip counted, multiplied the rows by the columns.

We tried to work at a small decibel level, we each had an organizer in our group to keep the rest of the group, the writers, the drawers and the techies on task.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to try and finish the posters by our new deadline.

We went to Whispering Woods and we chose a tree that we wanted to describe so some other group could find it.

Grade 4's played a place value game called Batter's Up and had questions from the textbook. Grade 3's watched a SLA video and answered questions about a chart and make a graph.

Sept 29-Run Across Coffin for Terry Fox

3 We had an author visit today. An orange sheet is coming home with information about ordereing his books. we just want to advise you that some of the books are rated young adult and may not be appropriate for grade 3 and 4, please use your discretion
4 Terry Fox Run: bring your water bottle, dress for the weather, proper running shoes. the pep rally /assembly will be from 10:30 to 10:45 and the race will take place from 10:45-11:30.

We are going to identify loud sounds in the school and we will measure them using a decibel measuring app on the iPad.

We need to fix our mistakes (editing) and rewrite a good copy of our work.

We learned how to label the borders of Canada.

We labelled the borders on a map of Canada, we also coloured Alberta blue. We also coloured the flag, the Great Horned Owl and the Wild Rose which are the provincial symbols.

We need to learn about the history of Alberta and the people who lived here.

In Math we worked on a problem about Fuzzies getting sick and we made a chart.

What did you learn today?
We learned about how much space is actually available for crops in the "Seed Survivor" presentation. We did a funny game in gym where we had to move an object around a circle without hands.
How did you show what you learned?
In Math we solved the problem of the day by drawing a picture, writing a number sentence and a word sentence. In science we wrote in our journal about what we learned in the seed survivor presentation and why it was important to us.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn more problem solving strategies in math.

4 Thank you for sending the green folder back and forth everyday. It is really important that it comes into class with the students even if it is empty. This is a great way to establish a routine that increases responsibility and helps parents to know if homework is coming home.  I will help them to ensure that their homework gets in the green folder, and it will be their job to make sure it gets into their backpack and back to school.
5 tomorrow is library day, don't forget your library books.

We learned about how to pick out just the right book for you. We also learned the problem solving strategies guess and check and draw a picture. We played a game with hoops in gym. We also started a new art project. Ask me about it!

In Daily Five we picked a just right book and read them. We increased our stamina to be able to read independently for 3 mins. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to colour our art with oil pastels.

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned about the cardinal directions. We also learned that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. We learned that a map maker is called a cartographer. We also identified landmarks that will help us tell north, east, south and west in our school yard.
How did you show what you learned?
We became cartographers and we named the trails and areas in 
Whispering Woods and voted on the names of two trails. Ask me about that!
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn how to use a compass and we need to finish voting on the names of the Whispering Woods paths and areas.

6 For health, for the next week, please write down when you go to sleep and when you wake up, and see if you are getting 10-11 hours per night. Write down your routine and see if you can make any changes to improve your sleep routine.
Highlights
What did you learn today? 
In music we learned about rhythms, we learned about Beakerhead and we did our performance with our bubblewrap instruments and filmed it to be uploaded to Beakerhead tomorrow. We learned about what time we go to bed and what time we get up and how much sleep we need,and we talked about doing calming things before we go to bed. Today in Math we had buddies and used whiteboards to make subtraction problems with the number 70 45 and 25.

We learned to make instruments from sticks and bubble wrap for the Beakerhead challenge. We made bows and percussion sticks from wood we found in the whispering woods.

We went to the whispering woods and practiced our rhythm and instruments with our music teacher, Ms Stephure.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to film our Beakerhead challenge and learn how to do it front of a camera.

We went to the cafe and heard everyone different ideas about stamina, we worked on our Beakerhead project.

We shared our ideas about what we should do for the Beakerhead ingenuity challenge which includes bubble wrap and nature and music.
What do you need to learn next?
We need practice reading stamina. Our goal is 3 mins. Today we only lasted 17 seconds.

Sept 9- The Listening Walk

3 Fresh Air Friday Journal entry for homework if not finished in class. Please look in the green communication folder for the fresh Air Friday journal. If your child has brought their journal home, they need to complete it at home and bring in back in their communication folder on Monday. The assignment was to list five sounds they heard and the objects that made the sound. 
**A note about Homework in Room 5**
Daily reading is always on the agenda list, reading to self, aloud or with an adult is one of the most helpful activities you can encourage your child to do. A Problem of the Week will be coming home Mondays and handed in by Thursday of each week. Any other homework that is sent home will be tasks or assignments that they did not get finished during class time. Check the communication folder for any unfinished items.
