March 21 - Spring Break!!!

We need to learn other forms of measurement like Kilometers, meters, centimeters and millimeters.

March 18 - Our Robot Story!

We learned about creating a character today. We talked about character traits. Ask me what those are!!!

We had to put some details about our character by writing 5 character traits that we imagine them having.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to write about characters in our robot story.

March 19 - Dino Slides

We started learning about measurement.

We went outside with a string that was about a meter long and measured things that were about a meter and recorded it in our FAF journal.

We need to learn about different units of measurement (cm, mm, m, km, dm)

We are practicing this in our guided reading groups.

We need to try and do this in all subject areas.

What did you learn today?
We learned 7 different ways to start our stories. Ask me what they are!
How did you show what you learned?
We wrote different story starters for our robot story that we are going to be working on. Today we learned about setting, character and something weird. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to share our beginnings with you (parents) at conferences and we need to identify what kind of story beginnings that authors use in 10 different books. We also need to identify what our problem and solution is in our robot story. Please be thinking about this over the next week.

We need to do the next part of our timeline which is the Mesozoic Era - includes the dinosaurs.

We learned how to play the dinosaur game. We also tried to make life size dinosaur footprints in the snow, but we had some technical difficulties.

March 7 - Patrick And Spongebob Eat Fossils

2 Blue Duotang Literature Circle/Guided Reading group Work. Some students have homework to complete for Monday. 
3 Red Duotang - Problem of the Day - Due Monday. I have put stickies on the pages that students need to do corrections on. The problems have been posted to the blog. Winter Problems 1 and 2 is posted starting Nov 26. It is an expectation that students are doing corrections on a regular basis. This is not happening for all students. Gentle reminders for students to bring their red duotang home and do corrections would help out immensely. The stickie placed on the side of the page indicates that I need to mark the correction. Thanks for your help.
Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned about whether you should keep the dinosaur fossil you find or whether you should give it to the government to be put in a museum.
How did you show what you learned?
We read through the textbook about different opinions or points of view about the issue of finding a fossil. We then decided whether each of the viewpoints supported keeping it or giving it to the government. We then chose which viewpoint we agreed with. Ask me what I chose!
What do you need to learn next?
We need to finish our rough copy of our opinion writing and then create our good copy. Ms Cowdy will share this with you at conferences in a couple weeks.

March 6- X Marks the Spot

What did you learn today?
We learned how to write exclamation and thoughts and feelings story starters.
How did you show what you learned?
We took the starter sentence, "This is the story about the time I built a robot in my basement." We have rewritten in three ways now to try to grab the reader's attention.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to do the last type of story starter which is the sound effect one.

March 5 - Dinosaurs Like Going Down the Slide

What did you learn today?
We started our dinosaur project today. We picked our dinosaurs.
How did you show what you learned?
We made some google slides. We have a page that tells us what each slide should have on it. There is also another page with a rubric on it. A rubric tells you how it is going to be marked. We have to mark it ourselves before Ms Cowdy marks it.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to practice marking ourselves so that we know what we need to make better, what level we are at and we know what the teacher expects.

March 4 - The picklezoic era

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned about the paleozoic era which was 250 million to 600 million years ago. We learned that Alberta was mostly underwater during this era.
How did you show what you learned?
We drew a picture of what Alberta would of looked like.
What do you need to learn next?
We are going to draw a bunch of different eras in Alberta's history and create a timeline. The next era we will be doing is the Mesozoic era.
