Tuesday, June 27 - Machine Mayhem!

Agenda:

2 On Thursday we are having a water device challenge. Please bring a water device, towel and spare set of clothes. 
3 Social studies due tomorrow.
Highlights
What did you learn today?
We tested our science (Simple Machines) projects.
How did you show what you learned?
We used a ramp, hallway and the Learning Commons to measure how far our machines travelled.
What do you need to learn next?
We could practice improving our simple machines at home.

June 26 - Ready, Set, Go!

2 Lots of work coming home everyday this week. Please have your child show you all their work.
3 Bring fidget spinners and bottles for math probability centers.
4 Science projects and logbooks due today and tomorrow.
Highlights
What did you learn today?
We presented our Science devices that moved.
How did you show what you learned?
We raced or demonstrated our devices today. The longest distance that an air propelled vehicle went was 4.5m. The helium filled project went the farthest, at least 13m.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to have the people who have not had a chance to demo, to do it tomorrow!

June 23 - Ethnobotany

What did you learn today?
We revisited our FAF winter ethnobotany work in Whispering Woods.
How did you show what you learned?
We sketched the summer version of the plants  we studied in the winter.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to finish 2 excellent sketches with a whole plant picture and a close up.

June 22 - What's the Chance?

4 Bring your fidget spinners and bottles tomorrow.
Highlights
What did you learn today?
We started our new math centers on probability.
How did you show what you learned?
In the fidget spinner center there are sheets that we had to colour in to make spinners. We had to use our fidget spinner to see which colour it landed in. We then had to figure out the probability of events in a fraction and a decimal. In the rock, paper,scissors center we had to play r, p, s with a partner and record who won and which one you won with. Then you had to figure out the probability of each win. We also had a bottle flipping center. We had to practice how to flip it and then we had to choose a number of times we were going to flip it with four different bottles. We had to figure out the percentage of successful flips.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to complete the centers.

June 21 Pig Game

Agenda:

2 Gr. 4 H.S. form due by Friday, if possible. 
3 Bring fidget spinner and an empty water bottle (if you have them).
What did you learn today?
We played a new game in music, 'Catch the Sow'.
How did you show what you learned?
We had two people as a farmer and a sow, and they chased each other through rows. Ask me about it at home.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to play the game again, so that we can get better at playing it.

We need to finish our work for our page we are making for social. Some of us need to finish our research for our social project.

We started our watercolour sketches for our Alberta Alphabet Book
How did you show what you learned?
We sketched the person, place or thing in our journal.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to start putting it on watercolour paper and we also need to do our decorative alphabet letter, type up our fact list, create a poem and put it together on a page to make a book for our library patron's reading pleasure.

We made a book report on a book we had finished reading during the year and we shared it with our classmates. We made a list of books we would like to read based on the book tastings we did.

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We started our unit on time in math.
How did you show what you learned?
Grade 3 - We used the textbook and we timed other people to see how many things they could do in a minute. Then we answered some questions.
Grade 4 - We practiced telling time on analog and digital clocks. Some of us talked about the 24 hour clock.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to get better at telling time, adding and subtracting time, write the calendar date numerically.

June 6 - We Need More Grizzly Bear Protection

What did you learn today?
We had a presentation from Alberta Tomorrow.
How did you show what you learned?
We all we held onto a rope in a circle, we leaned back and tried to find a balance. This was to show us how Alberta needs to have a balance between the environment and the economy. We also talked about the different stakeholders like the farmer, conservation association, sport fisherman, oil and gas production, chamber of commerce, watershed protection association, forestry production, greenhouse gas reduction. We then used the simulator to make a plan for Alberta's future. I can show you how to use this!
What do you need to learn next?
We need to finish our plan and submit it to Ms. Cowdy

What do you need to learn next?
We need to try using the simulator for Alberta Tomorrow.

We started our logbook. We had to identify what we were planning to build. We also had to tell what that machine is used for in real life.

We will be starting to build, record our procedure and start testing our devices.
