We did a practice Science test today to help us to understand what we understand well and what we still need to study.

We wrote the blue practice test and then Ms Cowdy took up the answers. We talked about how to answer multiple choice questions and the importance of reading the WHOLE question. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will write the test tomorrow.

Feb 22 - Successful Math Night!

4 Thanks you to the families that came out for math night! Our hearts were multiplied tenfold by the divisions of families that subtracted other activities to make math night an addition to their evenings. A student in Room 5 got the closest estimate of the chocolate eggs! The actual was 249 and she guessed 250! Congratulations!

We learned three different types of sketching techniques.
How did you show what you learned?
We looked at a picture of an acorn and we did a blind sketch, peek sketch and a quick sketch. Let me show you how.
What do you need to learn next?
We will continue to do nature journalling once a month over the remaining school months. Have a great weekend!

We learned about 4 different ways that writer's start sentences to begin a story.
How did you show what you learned?
We looked in books in the classroom and wrote the first sentence in our journals and decided which beginning the author had used. Ask me what the different beginnings are.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to practice using different beginnings to put in our own stories.

Feb 21 - Math Night Tonight!!!

What did you learn today?
We learned how to make glass yard art.
How did you show what you learned? 
Clay for Kids came with pieces of coloured glass. We each got a square of clear glass and then glued coloured pieces in a pattern onto the square. They are now going to put them in a kiln and the glass will melt or fuse together.
What do you need to learn next?
When we get these back we will put them in the fence. Next week, we will be doing clay art with Clay for Kids.

We watched a video about how the atlatl works. Did you know that is was the most widely used weapon with precontact indigenous people?

Feb 12- Archaeology!

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We had the Glenbow Ranch in class field trip today. We had 4 different stations that we rotated through. Station 1 was Build Billy the Bison. We had to place the correct real bones into the shaped foam mat. 

The second station was Dendrology, we had to look at a picture of skeleton bones and figure out how many people were there, and there were different examples of a tree and you had to count the number of rings to see how old it was and determine what was its best year and its worst year. Ask me how I know that! 

Station 3 was Ecofact or Artifact. We had to look at different items and decide if they had been made, used or changed by humans. If the answer was yes it was an artifact.

Station 4 was looking at Projectile Points or weapons. We looked at tips of spears, atlatls and arrows. 

Feb 11 - While My Ukulele Gently Weeps

We learned what to do when we come into the class because we are starting to play the ukulele.

We have to come in, grab our ukulele, tune it and do a warm up quietly.

We need to learn how to tune it and play it!

Feb 8 - Instrument Presentations

Some of us had to present our instruments to the rest of the class and demonstrate how they changed pitch.

We need to finish our presentations on Monday.

Feb 7 - Bluto!!!

We learned how to write the conclusion for our instrument experiment in Science. 
How did you show what you learned?
We first answered the question of our whole experiment which was: What is the variable that changes the pitch of my instrument?
What do you need to learn next?
We have to write down how we can make improvements to our instrument if we were to build it again. We will also be demonstrating our instruments.

Feb 6- NMC

Highlights
We went to the National Music Center today. These are a few of our favourite things:
-The Kimball Theatre Organ was almost deafening and full of ear bubbling joy!
-The vocal booth made us feel like real singers.
-The sound mixer was ear popping.
-The giant synthesizer that showed the sound waves was mind blowing.
-The electric drum was unbeatable!
- The strangest instrument we encountered was the Hurdy-Gurdy. It sounded like a whining cow, nails on a chalkboard, or a soundtrack to a creepy movie.

Feb 5 - Alberta's History

2 Field Trip tomorrow. We leave at 8:45, so please don't be slow. Please bring your lunch as we will be eating at the National Music Center. We will not be bringing our backpacks so bring your lunch in a container you can carry. We will be returning to the school around 2:30pm.

We wrote down what we know and what we want to know about dinosaurs and paleontology.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to have an understanding of this part of Alberta's history and we will be having an in school field trip from the Glenbow Valley Ranch on Feb 12.

We had to check each other's tests in music. We learned about the word confidential and what it means. We also learned in language arts about the difference between simple, compound and complex sentences.

We copied some sentences that Ms Cowdy wrote on the board. We are practicing changing sentences from simple to compound to complex sentences.
What do you need to learn next?
We hope that we can start doing this more in our own writing in our journal.
