Sept 29-Run Across Coffin for Terry Fox

3 We had an author visit today. An orange sheet is coming home with information about ordereing his books. we just want to advise you that some of the books are rated young adult and may not be appropriate for grade 3 and 4, please use your discretion
4 Terry Fox Run: bring your water bottle, dress for the weather, proper running shoes. the pep rally /assembly will be from 10:30 to 10:45 and the race will take place from 10:45-11:30.

We are continuing to fill out our sleep tracker over the next week.

We are going to learn about the amount of food and water that your body needs.

We learned about hearing and vibrations.
How did you show what you learned?
We did a graphing activity to show how many decibels each sound has.
What do you need to learn next?
We are going to identify loud sounds in the school and we will measure them using a decibel measuring app on the iPad.

What did you learn today?
We learned the method of COPS. It is like CUBES, except we used it in our journal.
How did you show what you learned?
We used different colours of highlighters to underline our mistakes in our Book Box writing.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to fix our mistakes (editing) and rewrite a good copy of our work.

What did you learn today?
We learned how to label the borders of Canada.
How did you show what you learned?
We labelled the borders on a map of Canada, we also coloured Alberta blue. We also coloured the flag, the Great Horned Owl and the Wild Rose which are the provincial symbols.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn about the history of Alberta and the people who lived here.

Math: We learned about the problem solving strategy of looking for patterns.
Gym: We did some practice for the Terry Fox Run
Journals: We talked about what a finished journal looks like for seed survivor.
Art: We worked on our leaf art which we coloured with oil pastels.
Music: We had a fire drill and we played a game where you can't say the number 3.
How did you show what you learned?
In Math we worked on a problem about Fuzzies getting sick and we made a chart.

We need to start a new art project in art and practice finding a pattern word problems.

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned about how much space is actually available for crops in the "Seed Survivor" presentation. We did a funny game in gym where we had to move an object around a circle without hands.
How did you show what you learned?
In Math we solved the problem of the day by drawing a picture, writing a number sentence and a word sentence. In science we wrote in our journal about what we learned in the seed survivor presentation and why it was important to us.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn more problem solving strategies in math.

Sept 19-A Bunch of Hoopla!

4 Thank you for sending the green folder back and forth everyday. It is really important that it comes into class with the students even if it is empty. This is a great way to establish a routine that increases responsibility and helps parents to know if homework is coming home.  I will help them to ensure that their homework gets in the green folder, and it will be their job to make sure it gets into their backpack and back to school.
5 tomorrow is library day, don't forget your library books.

We learned about how to pick out just the right book for you. We also learned the problem solving strategies guess and check and draw a picture. We played a game with hoops in gym. We also started a new art project. Ask me about it!
How did you show what you learned?
In Daily Five we picked a just right book and read them. We increased our stamina to be able to read independently for 3 mins. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to colour our art with oil pastels.

Sept 16-Mini Cartographers

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned about the cardinal directions. We also learned that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. We learned that a map maker is called a cartographer. We also identified landmarks that will help us tell north, east, south and west in our school yard.
How did you show what you learned?
We became cartographers and we named the trails and areas in 
Whispering Woods and voted on the names of two trails. Ask me about that!
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn how to use a compass and we need to finish voting on the names of the Whispering Woods paths and areas.

Sept 15- Wake Up!

5 Tomorrow is FAF. Please dress for the weather, bring water bottle, snacks, etc. We will be going to WW, schoolyard and Barrett Park.
6 For health, for the next week, please write down when you go to sleep and when you wake up, and see if you are getting 10-11 hours per night. Write down your routine and see if you can make any changes to improve your sleep routine.
Highlights
What did you learn today? 
In music we learned about rhythms, we learned about Beakerhead and we did our performance with our bubblewrap instruments and filmed it to be uploaded to Beakerhead tomorrow. We learned about what time we go to bed and what time we get up and how much sleep we need,and we talked about doing calming things before we go to bed. Today in Math we had buddies and used whiteboards to make subtraction problems with the number 70 45 and 25.

We learned to make instruments from sticks and bubble wrap for the Beakerhead challenge. We made bows and percussion sticks from wood we found in the whispering woods.
How did you show what you learned?
We went to the whispering woods and practiced our rhythm and instruments with our music teacher, Ms Stephure.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to film our Beakerhead challenge and learn how to do it front of a camera.

We went to the cafe and heard everyone different ideas about stamina, we worked on our Beakerhead project.
How did you show what you learned?
We shared our ideas about what we should do for the Beakerhead ingenuity challenge which includes bubble wrap and nature and music.
What do you need to learn next?
We need practice reading stamina. Our goal is 3 mins. Today we only lasted 17 seconds.

Sept 9- The Listening Walk

3 Fresh Air Friday Journal entry for homework if not finished in class. Please look in the green communication folder for the fresh Air Friday journal. If your child has brought their journal home, they need to complete it at home and bring in back in their communication folder on Monday. The assignment was to list five sounds they heard and the objects that made the sound. 
**A note about Homework in Room 5**
Daily reading is always on the agenda list, reading to self, aloud or with an adult is one of the most helpful activities you can encourage your child to do. A Problem of the Week will be coming home Mondays and handed in by Thursday of each week. Any other homework that is sent home will be tasks or assignments that they did not get finished during class time. Check the communication folder for any unfinished items.

We learned about the listening walk, which was a book we read.

We went to the whispering woods and we had to try and hear stuff that was in the woods. We then recorded the sounds we heard in our field journals.

We had five minutes each to fill out each sheet with adding, subtracting, multiplication and division facts. This is so Ms Cowdy knows where she has to start with each student in math.
